Montagne Sainte-Victoire
for reed trio
Duration: 7’
Commissioned and premiered by Reed Theory: Kathryn Keller (English horn), Anthony Kalanick (clarinet), and Hannah Stroh (bassoon)
Program note:
This piece is inspired by a midsummer hike on Montagne Sainte-Victoire in the south of France. It is a languid, reflective interlude that incorporates songs of the local wildlife, specifically the Eurasian golden oriole, the short-toed treecreeper, and the Eurasian blackbird. The timelessness of the piece gives the piece a meditative quality, asking performers and listeners to be present in the moment and unworried about past mistakes or future concerns.
Recorded by Duo Ferula – Kelli Ray (clarinet) and Blake Adams (alto saxophone)
