heat wave

for saxophone quartet

Duration: 9’

I. Lazy Days
II. Boiling Point

The piece begins depicting the kind of summer day where it's so hot there's barely anyone outside—the perfect day to lounge in a pool with a cold beer. This movement uses motives from Gershwin's "Summertime," one of the favorite works of the composer's late grandfather (an amateur saxophonist). This transitions directly into the second movement, which is a stark contrast to the first. "Boiling Point" uses some of the same melodic material in a completely different way, showcasing the technical virtuosity of the saxophone quartet.

Heat Wave was composed for saxophonist Jarod Apple.
